Lectors are ministers of the word. They proclaim the first and second readings at Mass. They also lead the Prayer of the Faithful.

A lector must have the qualifications listed below and have a desire to minister in this capacity at the Eucharistic liturgy. The Lector must be of excellent character and serious about the practice of the faith.

Requirements for Becoming a Lector at Saint Boniface

1. You should be fully initiated and a practicing member of the Church. This includes being current on all sacraments, including baptism, first communion and confirmation. If married, you must be validly married in the Church. 
   (Youth who will be serving at Youth Masses are not required to be confirmed, but should be baptized and have received first communion, and be current with the sacraments appropriate for their age).
2. You must be a registered member of Saint Boniface Parish.
3. You should attend Mass regularly and be in good sacramental standing with the Church so that you can participate fully in the Eucharistic celebration.
4. You will be required to go through the volunteer application which includes a background check and a virtus class, and maintain compliance with the diocesan child protection policies.
5. Once these requirements are met, you will receive training from the Diocese and our Ministry Coordinator.
6. You will receive a Blessing and commissioning from the pastor during Mass when you begin your service as a lector.

Parishioners who have this gift may make their desire known to the pastor and volunteer to the coordinator of lectors. However, lectors will be selected after all other criteria have been established on the basis of objective pastoral need.

Lectors are carefully chosen based on their skills in proclamation, their willingness to complete formation in this ministry and their evidence of a deep spirituality. Proper measures are taken to ensure that qualified prospects are trained to carry out this ministry well. Being truly suited implies the necessary talents to serve as a lector. Thus, individuals who are not able to proclaim the readings in a clear manner that expresses the dignity of scripture may not be suited for this service in church.
